HO Voodoo Envy 133 The Slimmest Notebook

Creating a notebook from ground up is never easy as it seems. Lenovo took quite some time with their Lenovo X300 ThinkPad, and now HP's Voodoo gaming division have done something similar with their latest, shiniest and very pretty Voodoo Envy 133. Measuring a thin 0.7-inches (1.77cm) and weighing in at 3.4 pounds (1.54kg) on a carbon-fiber chassis and featuring a 13.3-inch LED backlit display, the Envy's compact frame and features looks set to give its competitors a run for their money. As for connectivity options, the Envy is no slouch in this department either as you'll be spoilt for choice with wireless, LAN, USB and HDMI.

Comfortable enough to fit on one hand, the Voodoo Envy 133 is lightweight, slim and pretty. Based on what we know so far, the Envy will be using a SSD, and features an Instant On function. Hot!

The Envy features a backlit keyboard with proximity sensors that detects when your fingers are typing. The sensor will then lock the trackpad against accidental brushes. Also, the trackpad features multi-gesture support for scrolling and pinch options.

The power brick of the Envy also doubles up as a wireless access point: plug in an Ethernet cable and a point-to-point connection will automatically be established, allowing the user to roam around while being connected wirelessly.

Alienware Area-51 m15x Gaming Notebook

A $1,449 version of the Area-51 m15x is coming soon, but getting a low-end Alienware is kinda like buying a muscle car with a wimpy six-cylinder engine: all show, no go.

The $2,149 Area-51 m15x comes with a 15.40inch 1440 x 900 display, which can display content of up to 720p. For $300 you can upgrade to a WUXGA, with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 LCD, for full 1200p goodness.

In the graphics department, a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT comes standard. A $150 upgrade gets you the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT GPU, which is more than enough for most multimedia enthusiasts. If you want the best of the best or will be playing the latest video games you can splurge on the 512MB NVISIA GeForce 8800M GTX for $500.

A 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 processor is standard. A 2.6GHz T7800 Intel Core 2 Duo processor is a $250 upgrade, but I recommend skipping the 2.6GHz option and going straigh to the 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 X7900 extreme edition processor if you’re looking for the best gaming experience.

The base configuration will get you 2GB of memory, with 4GB being a $300 option. If you’re comfortable with a screw driver, buy extra memory separately and install it yourself.

The m15x comes with a 200GB 7200RPM drive, which performs much better than teh optional 320GB 5400RPM drive. A 64GB solid state drive can be added as your primary drive for $775. I’m still recommending users steer clear of solid state drives until prices become more reasonable, unless they have a very compelling reason to buy one.

The Area 51 m15x has a “Smart Bay” that that comes stocked with an optical drive and can accommodate an extra drive or an extra battery. If you’re a movie or music buff and must bring your collection everywhere you go, opt for the 320GB Smart Bay drive.

A dual-layer DVD burner comes standard. You can get a Blu-ray Disc reader, that can also burn DVDs and CDs for $300. If you’re going to go that far, you might as well get the Blu-ray Disc burner for $100 more. The Blu-ray Disc player lets you burn up to 50GB of data onto a single disc, perfect for backups or sharing multimedia.

An HDMI port makes it easy to connect your Area-51 m15x to your HDTV.

The Alienware Area-51 m15x is a flashy machine, so you should definitely opt for the AlienFX option for $50. Illuminated keyboards are a great, and I can’t figure out why Alienware isn’t including this as standard equipment.

If you have the funds, the Area-51 m15x worth a close look. The styling is slick and fun. It’s one of, if not the most powerful 15-inch notebooks you’ll find.

ASUS dual-display notebook and liquid-cooled, overclocked GeForce 8800 GTX

ASUS's chic W5Fe has been shortlisted as one of the best products of CES 2007. In fact, ASUS was keen to point out that it is only one of three in the running for the product-of-the-show title. On first glance, it's hard to tell why. The W5Fe is strong in all the necessary areas but doesn't particularly stand out until you close the lid.

The laptop has another display that's main OS-agnostic and takes advantage of Microsoft Vista's SideShow feature which allows you to access music files, view pictures, and grab email details or notes without having to boot the laptop itself. Microsoft uses this model to highlight the feature itself. A nice touch and a truly handy feature for the business user.

On a different note, ASUS will also be launching an overclocked GeForce 8800 GTX card that's cooled by a supplied, all-in-one unit that's titled AquaTank.

Hitachi Unveils Water-Cooled Notebooks

For those who complain about the heat generated by your notebook; Hitachi has come up with a solution:

Water-cooled processors, currently the domain of supercomputers, high-end servers, and garage hobbyists, may be about to enter the mainstream.

Hitachi has developed a prototype notebook PC that uses a water-based solution to cool down its Pentium 4 processor and is planning to commercialize the product for corporate users in the third quarter of this year, the company said Tuesday.

The faster the processing speed of a chip gets, the more heat it generates, and this can cause trouble if the heat is not dissipated. On notebook PCs this is usually done with an air-cooling system that makes use of a fan bolted on top of the processor. In the prototype machine, Hitachi has adopted a water-cooling system, which the company says works more efficiently and makes less noise than a fan-based system.
